一.护胶作用
为了形成渗透率低的泥饼，要求钻井液中粘土颗粒粒径有合适的大小分布，同时要求有较多的细颗粒。降滤失剂的护胶作用在于：
1.吸附在粘土表面形成吸附层，以阻止粘土颗粒絮凝变大。
2.能把泥浆循环系统搅拌下所拆散的细颗粒通过吸附稳定下来，不在粘结成大颗粒。这样增加了细颗粒的比例，有利于形成细致泥饼。
二.提高滤液粘度可以降低滤失量
滤失量与钻井液滤液粘度的0.5次方成反比。有机降滤失剂加入钻井液后提高了滤液粘度，使滤失量降低。
三.增加钻井液中搬土颗粒的水化程度
这样可以降低滤失量。降滤失剂吸附在钻液中的搬土颗粒上，使其水化程度增加颗粒的水化膜增厚，形成的滤饼在高压下易变形，滤饼的渗透率降低。
四.降滤失滤剂分子本身的堵孔作用
有机高分子降滤失剂的分子尺寸在胶体颗粒范围内，加入这些外处理剂后，它们一方面使分子的长链楔入滤饼的间隙中，另一方面长链子卷曲成球状，堵塞滤饼微孔隙，使滤饼薄而细致，从而降低滤失量。
